You can get a 15 band sound equalizer on Linux. Looking around for presets for mplayer yielded no success on the internet. Finally, chanced upon pulseaudio equalizer project. You can install it on Fedora using:
# yum install pulseaudio-equalizer <enter>
After that, run it from the Sound and Video applications on your desktop. You can also get the same application for Ubuntu.
