After lot of attempts to import .ics files onto the Android phone, I finally came across this one named Calendar Processor on the Google Play Store at this link.

I tried ICS importer, but it only allowed import to the Google calendar. Calendar Processor allowed selection between Phone calendar and the Google calendar.
